This is a big week for a lot of folks. It’s Thanksgiving of course, you’ll likely been spending some more time with friends or family, have at least one day off from work (maybe more), and the holiday shopping season shifts into full swing.

It’s also a big week for decorating for Christmas. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been seeing decorations popping here and there on houses around Central Minnesota. For some people, if it happens before Thanksgiving, it is too early.

I used to be one of those people, but then I realized whatever makes people happy should be fine with me, especially when it pertains to their house.

I heard something recently that caused me to stop and think. Someone said that they decorated early each year because they felt it helped them keep their spirits up and even stave off the depression that winter can bring with it. Could that be the case?

There have been many published reports that echo similar findings that there is some truth to that way of thinking.

For some people, the decorating brings up good memories and nostalgia of being young and all the expectations that came with the holidays. That alone can help trigger good thoughts and feelings. The expectations you had as a child can be grander when you’re older.

And of course, if you’ve got kids or grandkids, their excitement can help lift your mood. The act of decorating can help connect you with your family and friends as well, which can also serve as a pick-me-up.

All the lights and decorations can serve as positive sensory stimulation which can help serve as boost your mood.

If you’re not one of the people who enjoys all the decorations and lights, just remember there are some folks out there who really need the festive feel of the holidays.

Of course, not everyone feels excitement or happiness around the holidays. Here is a list of contacts for those who feel mental health issues around the holidays.
