St. Cloud Is Home to One of Only Three Art-o-Mats in Minnesota
Getting unique pieces of art from local St. Cloud area artists is now part of a fun experience at the library. The area's Art-o-Mat is set up at the Great River Regional Library Friends of the Library Bookstore. For just $5, you can choose a unique piece of art from a repurposed cigarette vending machine.
An Art-o-Mat is a retired cigarette vending machine that has been converted to vend original artwork. There are over 400 artists who have their work in 90 active Art-o-Mat machines throughout the United States. The St. Cloud Arts Commission is proud to host an Art-o-Mat in our community, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to "kerplunk" some art the Arts Commission will be placing the machine in various locations.
The Art-o-Mat is currently at the St. Cloud Friends of the Library Bookstore located at the Great River Regional Library. Proceeds from the sales of the art go to the St. Cloud Arts Commission and the St. Cloud MN Friends of the Library.
I remember seeing one of these at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and thinking how cool it was. What a great way to upcycle a vintage vending machine and turn it into something that benefits artists and the community.
I'm so glad I went and checked out this Art-o-Mat, and now that I know it exists I'll be going a lot more often. It's so fun, because you have an idea of what you are going to get when you put your $5 into the machine, but opening the box is such a fun surprise.
