Since the pandemic, there is one month that seems to be the time in which St. Cloud Police are focusing on traffic safety more so than any other month. The month that has seen the most traffic stops since 2021 is August.

You can go back and see all of the calls for service, based on the category in which they are sorted, all the way back to 2005 using the City of St. Cloud website. That's when I found out that August seems to be the month in which you have an increased likelihood of being pulled over.

According to the raw data, August 2022, saw 1326 traffic stops. That's about 500 more traffic stops then the next closest month, April, in 2022. Going back another year to 2021, August once again was the month with the most traffic stops. August of 2021 saw 880 traffic stops, which was only about 100 more than the next closest month, April.

Going back to 2020, the early parts of the year, January and February saw the most traffic stops, but then once March began we saw COVID become an issue and traffic stops, while they didn't stop, did drop compared to earlier in the year.

Back to this past year, I've got to think August is such a big month for traffic stops as it's the month that students return to campus at St. Cloud State. The influx of new students and new drivers more than likely means more stops for minor driving infractions. I'm not sure what makes April such a big month for traffic stops...maybe it's all the drivers getting back into good driving habits from the winter?

In total 2022 saw more than 50,000 calls for service throughout St. Cloud.

It's important to note that a traffic stop doesn't always end up in a ticket being written and that when you are pulled over it's generally a pretty good idea to remain calm, and over-communicate with the officer so both parties understand what is going on inside and outside the vehicle.

Good luck, and slow down out there!

Alex Wayne recently bought a mash-up of a Minnesota vehicle. It's a Mini Cooper frame with a Chevy Express van skeleton on top. This vehicle definitely turns some heads as it goes by, but it was supposed to do that.
