El Nino Pattern Forming, What Does That Mean For MN’s Winter?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued an El Niño Advisory last week. While we are just getting summer started, fans of Minnesota's bold winters might have to start making plans to travel out of state if they are looking for plenty of snow, especially if this pattern holds.
What Is An El Niño, & How Does It Affect MN's Winter?
If you aren't familiar with what an El Niño weather pattern is, no problem. Here is a quick breakdown of what that is, and what it means for Minnesota's winter weather.
According to NOAA, "a typical El Niño winter, the jet stream over the north Pacific Ocean tends to shift southward, bringing the storm track over the southern tier of the U.S. For temperatures, El Niño often leads to a warmer-than-usual winter over the northern U.S."

So that means if the current weather pattern over the Pacific Ocean holds, we are in store for warmer temperatures and drier conditions this winter, which means less snow and a milder winter.
Not good for industries that specialize in winter recreation or clean up.
No Two El Niños Are The Same
Just like no two snowflakes are the same, no two El Niños are the same. Right now, NOAA is predicting that the Pacific Ocean could see temperatures 2.0 °C warmer, meaning a stronger El Niño weather pattern this fall and winter.
It's Just An Advisory
Right now it's just an advisory, but keep an eye on it, because if we see higher ocean temperatures, that would mean a more intense El Niño pattern this fall and winter. To put what this might look like, you don't have to go that far back in time.
The last time we saw an El Niño winter was 2023-2024, and if you go further back, the winters of 2015-2016, 2009-2010, and 1997-1998 are the most recent examples of harsher-than-normal El Niño winters here in the Bold North.
For fans of snow and all things winter here in the land of 10,000 winter activities aren't going to be real happy with the forecast, but there's still time for the weather pattern to change, or cool off.
