Three Things To Know During Severe Weather In Minnesota
Minnesotans have entered into severe weather season, and with that comes the expectation that everyone knows what to do when severe weather breaks out. It can be confusing about what you should be doing when severe weather happens, especially if you are somewhere unfamiliar. I've got three things you should know when severe weather happens.
I like to keep things simple, so here are the three things you should know when severe weather breaks out here in Minnesota.
Three Things To Know In Severe Weather
Get In: If you are outside, get inside. If you are inside already, get as far into the center of the building or room you are in as possible, avoiding being near windows.
Get Down: Get low, if you can, get to a basement that is below grade; if that isn't possible, get to the lowest place where you are.
Cover Up: If and when the worst happens, flying debris and falling debris will be happening; cover up as much as possible. Protect your head and neck by covering them with your arms, blanket, helmet, or anything you can find.
I know these seem like very simple steps/things to follow, but in the heat of the moment, the easier it is to remember, the safer you'll be.
In an apartment or hotel?
The same rules apply; get low if severe weather happens. Find a stairwell, get to the lowest possible place, hunker down, and cover up. If you are in a hotel, take a look at the emergency exit plan that is often on the back of the door; it will help you find the closest stairwell.
