A signature piece of Minnesota art is getting an update. The spoonbridge, which is a part of the iconic 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' statue is getting some much needed attention. The update, has caused the statue to be fenced off, creating challenges for visitors to snag a picture of the iconic outdoor piece of art.

What are they doing to the 'Spoonbridge and Cherry'?

The 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' which is found at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, walking distance from the Walker Art Center, is undergoing some regular maintenance in an effort to keep it looking good.

A fence has been placed around the sculpture while the painting is being done, along with the temporary fence, a sign has been put up, letting visitors know what is going on.

Try another photo-op at the park, until May 23

The sign on the fence reads:

We're painting the spoon in Spoonbridge and Cherry! Outdoor artworks need routine maintenence to look their best. These treatments also protect the fountain-sculpture from the steady flow of water that cascades into the pond below.

The crew is refreshing the 5,800-pound spoonbridge in the artists original color. The cherry got a new coat of paint in 2022.

Come back after May 23 to see the results!

Why is the 'Spoonbridge & Cherry' so iconic

The outdoor spectacle is often depicted as one of the iconic tourist/photo-op spots in Minnesota. The statue became an icon after being featured as the centerpiece at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, in 1988.
