This little dog has been a joy ever since she came home with us from Grey Face Rescue & Retirement.  I can't explain how different it is having a dog that only weighs 12 pounds versus my 130 pound Great Dane Sampson. I've went from serving Sampson a minimum of 6 cups of dog food a day, to just a cup for little Gloria Astoria.

I learned that my little ChugBug had a diet that consisted mostly of human food before she came to me. We've switched her to a special diet to see if we can help her with some apparent food allergies. She always wants MY food though. So I was wondering...what are the Do's and Dont's for dogs? I was shocked to learn about some of the things you can't give to a dog!  I found a huge list of verified fact based things I never knew could hurt our pups. You can learn the full list by clicking HERE.

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG THESE FOODS

Grapes & Raisins: Contain toxic chemicals that can shut down your dogs kidneys completely and cause death. Don't EVER give them grapes or raisins.  Keep in mind...Raisin bread, raisin bagels....I'm glad I didn't give her any!

Salt: People food usually has extra salt added, and too much salt can kill your pet! If you've given them some lefts overs, make sure you have a big bucket of water so they can stay hydrated and try to get that salt out of their system.

Chocolate: I've heard this one before but didn't know the reasoning. Chocolate contains Theobromine and caffeine which are two stimulants that dogs can't efficiently metabolize.

Cheese: Due to the fat and lactose content of cheese, some dogs may have digestive symptoms, such as stomach pain and diarrhea. It's best to limit cheese intake.

Nuts: Since most nuts are bad for dogs...just avoid them.

Onions: This one shocked me. It is important to note that all components and forms of onions are toxic to dogs, even the leaves, juice and processed powders, such as onion powder. It can cause lots of problems and Anemia. NOT GOOD!

Avocados...Healthy for people....Poison for dogs.  They should never be consumed by dogs because they contain a toxin called Persin, which is known to be very poisonous to dogs. It may lead to fluid accumulation in their lungs and chest, which can cause breathing difficulties, oxygen deprivation and even death.  Persin is found in all parts of the avocado, including the fruit, pit, leaves and bark. Always keep avocados away from your dog.

Garlic is a big no no. Thus, if you use garlic salt, keep that away from your dog. Very poisonous!

The list goes on and on...I know you probably want a reason to NOT give these foods to your dogs, but I don't have all the time in the world to list them. Just don't give these to your dog:

  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Raw Yeast Dough
  • Nutmeg
  • Alcohol
  • Xylitol
  • Milk?
  • Honey?
  • Cinnamon?
