The Nations Best-Funded Tractor Safety Plan is Now in Minnesota
Governor Mark Dayton has signed legislation that gives Minnesota the best program in the nation for farmer's tractor rollover safety for aging machines.
The number 1 cause of death in farm related accidents is related to tractors. There have been more than 1,700 deaths in the US from accidents on a farm since 2003. Minnesota has had 210 farm worker deaths since 2003, with a majority of the accidents related to tractors.
The program helps to install safety equipment, that includes a roll bar, which can cost $900 to install on a tractor. The new program would reimburse farmers up to 70% of the cost of installing these safety roll bars. This discount would apply to tractors build prior to 1987.
