Why IMAX Is Returning To Minnesota This October

If you are a fan of going to the movie theater to catch a film, your viewing experience is about to change. While there are some great local options for catching a movie around St. Cloud, an IMAX theater is set to open in a few weeks, just an hour from here.

IMAX Experience Coming An Hour From St. Cloud

I learned this morning that a movie theater in Plymouth, run by the Mann family, is bringing an IMAX experience to moviegoers. The new theater, which is currently being renovated to become IMAX-compatible, is set to open in about a week.

According to a social media post by the Plymouth Theater:

It’s starting to look like an IMAX theatre.

The screen frame is nearly finished, the new IMAX sound system is more than halfway installed, and Auditorium 14 is changing fast.

A lot of the work over the last few weeks has been hidden behind walls, ceilings and scaffolding. Now you can actually start to see what this room is becoming.

And next week, we get to share another big milestone…tickets for Digger, the first film opening in our new IMAX theatre.

Haven't Had IMAX In Minnesota Since 2019

It's hard to believe that Minnesota has been without an IMAX option for roughly 7 years, as the IMAX theater at the Minnesota Zoo closed back in January of 2019.

Part of the excitement for the return of IMAX is this past summer's blockbuster, The Odyssey, which was filmed in IMAX.

Technology has helped bring back IMAX theaters with the ability to shoot movies using high-end digital cameras that work with the IMAX system.

It sounds like franchises like Marvel, DC, and Dune will give IMAX-equipped theaters enough movies to make them worth the switch.

After having spent the greater part of the last three weeks outside Minnesota, it has been great to be back. We live in a very beautiful part of the country. From the North Shore's jagged cliffs to the rolling croplands of southern Minnesota and to the driftless area near Preston, our state is filled with beautiful sights.
