If there's one thing that most people in Minnesota look forward to, it's a night out at the bar with friends, enjoying a few games of bingo, getting some pulltabs, and getting in on a meat raffle.

There is a new bill in the House right now that could be making some big changes to our meat raffle experience.

THE MEAT RAFFLE BILL IS IN THE HOUSE

The bill proposing changes to help keep the program more current was created to help keep up with the rising costs of meat and provide more flexibility for charitable organizations looking to raise money for their causes.

If the bill passes during this session, the new changes could be in effect as early as this fall.

CHANGES TO MINNESOTA MEAT RAFFLES

Right now, current limits for meat raffles are set at selling tickets at $2, and having up to $70 in value for the prizes received. The new bill would propose raising the ticket prices up to $5, and raising the value of the prizes from $70 to $200.

WHO WANTS TO LOSE MONEY?

Due to the cost of inflation, it's been harder and harder for charitable organizations to make money on the meat raffles; sometimes, even LOSING money because of the cost of the meat.

The proposed changes would give organizations a chance to raise more money.

It's hoped that the bill will be sent through the committee this week and reach the Senate floor later this session. If it passes, we could see those changes go into effect before the end of the year.

GETTING CREATIVE

The organizations will have the ability to get more creative with how they play the game, but some may decide to stick with $1 and $2 tickets, while some might start out with a lower limit and raise it up to $5 for a bigger prize.

Regardless of how our local organizations decide to play, one thing we all know is that by participating in local meat raffles, we are helping our friends and neighbors raise more money, and we are all having fun in the process.
