Microsoft Word Is Putting an End to “Two Spaces Between Sentences”
HOW WILL I EVER ADJUST?
Times are changing. Now they are changing for my trained typing skills. I took classes to learn how to type quickly in high school; learning the finger positions to be able to type without ever having to glance at the sheet of paper in front of me; knowing that with accuracy, my typing and double spacing between sentences was accurate most of the time. but now! Microsoft Word has decided to change the rules of the game. Remember putting two spaces between every sentence? Yeah that....That is now incorrect. Don't do it. Stop doing what you've been doing for over 20 years and get with the new times. It's now illegal to leave two spaces in between sentences; and Microsoft Word will call you out with those little blue squiggly lines to tell you so.
WHY THE CHANGE?
According to an article I read that was published Monday, April 27th, 2020 by Scottie Andrew for CNN Businesss, Microsoft Word says that the reasoning behind two spaces between sentences was created so that people could clearly see where a sentence ended, and where the next began. But today, the millions of fonts that you have to choose from typically adjust automatically; so there is no sense in spacing any more than you have to. Single spacing here; See? It works...you really don't need to double space it out anymore.
TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS
The next time you're playing a game of trivial pursuit and the question comes up, "How many spaces do you type between sentences?" You can be the smart one and tell them that two spaces at the end of a sentence ended in the year 2020, when typewriters were clearly a thing of the past.
Happy single spacing your sentences.
