Former St. Cloud State University Hockey Coach Out At Minnesota
It's being reported this afternoon that former St. Cloud State University Head Coach Bob Motzko is out at the University of Minnesota. It would also be the University of Minnesota's second hockey coach firing of the week, as Brad Frost was let go from his duties as the Gophers Women's Hockey Coach yesterday.
Started In 2018 After Coaching At SCSU
Motzko was brought in to the University of Minnesota to coach the Gopher Men's team in March of 2018 and had some success with the program, after leaving St. Cloud State University.
In his 8 seasons as head coach of the University of Minnesota men's hockey program he "returned the Maroon and Gold back to national prominence with back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2021-22 and 2022-23, including a runner-up finish in 2023, three Big Ten Conference regular season titles over the past four years, and five-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament."
Motzko was an assistant coach with the Gophers from 2001-2004 before coming to St. Cloud State to take over that program for 13-years. Motzko took the Huskies to one Frozen Four in Pittsburgh in 2013.
We Are In A Different Period Of College Athletics
With the change in NIL, boosters are now spending dollars on players, and if the players don't produce, it seems coaches are the ones getting the axe, as well as players moving on to the next better-paying school.
I'm not saying that this is what happened at the U of M, but for those who back the maroon and gold, hockey was always the sport that had the best chance at winning a National Championship.
So, Who Could Be The Next Coach Of The Gophers?
Some names that come to mind are:
David Carle - University of Denver
Pat Ferschweiler - Western Michigan
Jay Pandolfo - Boston University
