Remember spending summer nights chasing fireflies in the backyard?

For many of us, chasing fireflies with a mason jar was one of the best parts of summer.

MEMORIES

My cousins and I would spend summers running around our backyard and seeing tiny flashes of light blinking across the yard like little floating lanterns. We'd catch a few, admire their glow for a minute, and then let them go before heading inside.

RELIVE THE MAGIC

The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska is hosting its annual Firefly Viewing Nights, giving visitors a chance to see hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of fireflies lighting up the evening sky.

The special after-hours event runs from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. on June 25th through the 27th and again on July 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 11th, and 12th. Advance tickets are recommended because the event often sells out.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The evening begins with a presentation from local experts who explain the fascinating lives of these glowing beetles, often called lightning bugs.

After that, visitors can stroll one of three designated trails selected by Arboretum staff for the best opportunity to watch the fireflies put on their incredible natural light show.

Flashlights are encouraged to help navigate the trails once darkness settles in.

ENJOY OTHER ACTIVITIES WHILE YOU VIEW

There's more than just fireflies to enjoy. Guests can purchase popcorn, snacks, and beverages from the concession stand, create a glow-in-the-dark firefly ornament at the craft tent, and even enjoy local beer and wine while taking in one of Minnesota's most enchanting summer experiences.

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets are $10 for Arboretum members, $20 for non-members, and $7.50 for children.

If you've been looking for a unique family outing, a fun date night, or simply an excuse to reconnect with one of summer's simplest pleasures, this might be one of the most memorable evenings you'll have all season.
