A new survey found that 23 percent of people use their cell phones as a way to avoid other people.

I definitely do this when I'm sitting at the doctor's office, waiting in line for something or in a room full of people that I don't know. Sometimes it just seems awkward to make small talk with random strangers. It's easier to take your phone out and get lost on Facebook...but it doesn't make it right.

Ninety percent of people surveyed said that they used their phone at a social event because they saw someone else do it first and they thought it was OK.

I put together a video demonstrating situations in which it is NOT OK to avoid people by using your cell phone.
