
Deadly Bird Flu in Cats: What You Must Know

Have you noticed your cat isn't acting like they normally do? Have you thought that maybe they are just getting older? Perhaps you thought that springtime allergies were flaring up? Unfortunately for many, it could be a much more serious problem.
RECALLED CAT FOOD THAT COULD CAUSE BIRD FLU
The FDA is warning people who have purchased Savage Cat Food, that your cat could be experiencing bird flu.

SYMPTOMS OF BIRD FLU IN CATS
Symptoms of bird flu in cats include the following:
- Your cat has a fever
- Your cat suddenly has no energy
- Your cat doesn't want to eat
- Inflamed runny eyes
- Having a hard time breathing
- Experiencing Tremors
- Your cat's movements are stiff
- Your cat is having seizures
- Your cat seems to be experiencing blindness
BIRD FLU IS DEADLY FOR CATS
Unfortunately, there is no current cure for cats that get bird flu. The mortality rate is 67%. According to Petmd.com, 'Bird flu in cats is a medical emergency. If your cat shows any symptoms, take them to the vet immediately. If your cat is suspected to have bird flu, they will most likely be put in an isolated area to minimize spread to other cats. They could also be treated with fluids, antibiotics, and oxygen therapy; sometimes nutritional support. Unfortunately, you will have to take these precautions early if you suspect bird flu, as most people don't find out until after their pet passes that indeed was from bird flu. You may need to ask your vet to take action rather than waiting for results for bird flu.
PROTECT YOUR CATS
According to the article, it's not common for cats to catch bird flu; However, there are way to protect them including keeping them in the house so they are not exposed to birds that could have it. Also, cats should never drink raw dairy milk.
THE DANGERS OF RAW CAT FOOD
You should know that if you insist on your cat eatin graw food, that studies have shown raw pet food is more likely than other forms of cat food to be contaminated with various pathogens. Besides bird flu, they can also be infected with salmonella and E.coli.
RECALLS
Wild Coast LLC recalled batches of raw cat food earlier this month (March 2025) that was possibly causing bird flu in their cats; but now, as of March 15th, 2025, Savage Pet has announced their recall of two products that also have the potential to cause bird flu.
The affected products were as follows:
- Savage Cat Food Large Chicken Boxes (84 oz.), best by 11/15/2026
- Savage Cat Food Small Chicken Boxes (21 oz.) best by 11/15/2026
If you have purchased these products, you are encouraged to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
