“Watch Your Speed” In Minnesota’s Biggest City
CAMERAS ENFORCING SPEED LIMIT
Cameras that enforce the speed limit are coming to select locations in Minneapolis thanks to a new law that will have cameras set up in select locations to catch people that run red lights and are speeding.
The cameras are only being used to enforce traffic laws and cannot be used for anything other than that.
WHEN IS THE PROGRAM COMING TO MINNEAPOLIS?
The program is expected to start in Minneapolis in August of 2025. They are planning on setting up 5 cameras close to schools that have been identified as unsafe traffic locations.
HOW THE CAMERA SYSTEM WORKS
The first cameras that will be activated will be set up to make sure drivers are keeping to the speed limit in those areas. The cameras can only take pictures of the license plate. If you are given a citation, it will not go on your driving record. The citations will go to the owner of the vehicle, not necessarily the person driving the vehicle. If it wasn't you driving, you can contest the citation by signing a form that states you were not driving the vehicle.
CITATIONS AND TICKETING
The first citations will be issued a warning. However, the next time you have a lead foot, you'll be issued a ticket for $40.
According to an article, at least 33 people have been killed in Minneapolis by people speeding or running red lights. The new law is trying to protect innocent folks who are just crossing the street.
WHY NOW?
Ethan Fawley, Program Coordinator for Vision Zero in Minneapolis said, "We're not taking a picture of anyone. These cameras can only be used for automated traffic enforcement. They can't be used for anything else."
Fawley also said that the program is not about how much money the city can make; it's about changing people's driving behaviors.
