Minnesota is home to all kinds of wildlife, from bison, moose, white-tail deer, as well as timberwolves. A recent video, taken on Big Rice Lake near Remer and Outing, shows a big Minnesota wolf casually strutting across the ice, seemingly uncaring about the person filming it, feet away.

The video, which was shared on social media yesterday by WalleyeDan, was filmed by a friend earlier in the day.

When I watch the short video of the wolf crossing the lake, I can't help but be amazed at just how graceful the wolves move along the frozen lake surface. The other thing that I noticed was that the wolf really didn't seem to mind the human standing there filming it, that is a little unnerving to see.

Wolves are a hot-button issue here in Minnesota, with some Minnesotans feeling that the wolf population has become too large, and is affecting the livelihoods of ranchers, in contrast, others feel that the wolf population is still in need of protection.

What should you do if you see a wolf?

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

In the rare event that you do have an encounter with an aggressive wolf:

  • Don't run, but act aggressively stepping toward the wolf and yelling or clapping your hands if it tries to approach.
  • Do not turn your back toward an aggressive wolf, but continue to stare directly at it. If you are with a companion and more than one wolf is present place yourselves back to back and slowly move away from the wolves.
  • Retreat slowly while facing the wolf and act aggressively.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also stresses to Minnesotans that it is currently illegal for people to hunt and trap wolves in Minnesota.
