UPDATE: This lawsuit has been dismissed without prejudice.  That just simply means that they can refile at any time in the future.  Why has the Mall of American dismissed the lawsuit agains the Sugar Factory?  That is unknown.  According to Bring Me the News, the mall spokesperson and/or attorney has not commented on th situation.  But it seems that the rent that allegedly is around $2 Million, is still unpaid.  So, apparently you CAN go for years in a mall space and not pay your rent.  Crazy.

If you lived in an apartment, or in a house, and you didn't pay your rent, or your mortgage payment, how long do you think it would be before you would be getting an eviction notice?

My guess would be a lot sooner than 2018 when here we are in 2024.

Here we are with that situation at the Mall of America.  There is the Sugar Factory in the mall, and guess what... they haven't paid their rent since 2018.  And they are now being sued for eviction.  The mall claims that they owe around $2 million in back rent.

Now, yes, there are some other factors that do play into this.  According to Bring Me the News, there have been several agreements made between the mall and Lloyd Sugarman, the owner of the Sugar Factory.  Apparently he has not followed through with his end of the agreement(s).

If you are wondering what the Sugar Factory is... it's not (just) a candy store as the name might suggest.  It's actually a restaurant.

Sugar Factory Express is an American restaurant that offers a unique dining experience, combining gourmet burgers, signature sweet treats, and visually stunning drinks.

Sugar Factory Express is a popular destination for families, friends, and celebrities at Mall of America. With its Instagram-worthy moments and delicious food, Sugar Factory Express is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or enjoy a sweet treat. Follow us @SugarFactoryExpressMOA.

Sugar Factory replaced Pizza Studio, which was also owned by Sugaran, and was opened in 2018.  And from the sounds of it, they haven't paid any rent since the opening.  I'm surprised they haven't been shut down already for non payment.  Apparently the mall must be very lenient.
