The next time you are out on a walk or bike ride with your family, keep an eye out for one of the latest trends that is sweeping across the country. What's great about this new trend is that it borrows from another popular nationwide idea, just like in the free little libraries you see in various neighborhoods, trinket trade boxes are popping up in places. Here's what you need to know about the boxes.

Trinket Trade Boxes - A Fun Free Experience

Trinket trade boxes are small, mounted, community-run boxes that can be old electrical junction boxes and are often located on/near sidewalks and residential streets for exchanging small, whimsical items.

The trend allows people to either take a treasure or leave a treasure, including stickers, toys, and custom handmade items.

The idea of the trinket trade boxes seems to have been inspired by free little libraries.

Labeled As Trade Trinket Boxes

Obviously, the boxes are labeled as being trinket trade boxes, as having kids or young adults go into real electrical junction boxes would be bad. It might be worth your time to remind your kids of that they make sure that the box they are looking at is labeled, to avoid potential injury or death from electrical shock.

The boxes would also be out in the open, and not on the side of a house or residence.

A Few Already In Minnesota

I haven't seen any yet in Central Minnesota, but if you have, feel free to send us a message on the app. So far, all of the ones I have seen have been in the Twin Cities area, so the next time you are in the cities, you might want to see if you and the family can spot any.
