Rare Rattlesnake Den Discovered By Minnesota DNR Team
Snakes. They were one of my mother's biggest fears. Not everyone has this fear, but I'm glad that this story didn't appear on HER FB feed when this den of Timber Rattlesnakes was found in Southeast Minnesota recently.
Here in central Minnesota, I don't think we have to worry too much about running into this type of snake, but if you live in southern Minnesota, although it doesn't happen often because the species isn't thriving right now, you can still run across them.

VENOMOUS SNAKES IN MINNESOTA
The DNR says that although you may think you've seen a Timber rattlesnake before, it's more likely that you ran across a different type of snake because there are lots of snakes that mimic the rattle of the Timber rattlesnake, but they are not venomous. The only venomous rattlesnake found in Minnesota is the Timber.

NO NEED TO FEAR
For those of you who are afraid of snakes so much that it keeps you from being in the wild, it might comfort you to know that these snakes are typically pretty mellow. They don't want a confrontation. They will usually slither away or hide from you. But if they feel like you are threatening them, they will warn you to stay away by rattling their tail. Getting bitten by a Timber rattlesnake is very, very rare.
The reason the Timber Rattlesnakes are a threatened species in Minnesota is that their habitat is disappearing.
