The first use of a donkey to represent the Democratic Party appeared in Harper's Weekly. Drawn by Thomas Nast, the cartoon is entitled "A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion." I bet most members of the party that I know would be surprised by the negative connotation of the animal expressed by the cartoon! 4 Years later, Nash drew the now famous Republican Party elephant as a cartoon in the same publication, with a little less negativity.
