Minnesota is known for a lot of things, but one food that has become part of our state’s identity is Spam.

Now, Hormel is taking things to a whole new level just in time for summer baseball season.

INTRODUCING THE 'SPAM DOG'

The Austin-based company is introducing something called the “Spam Dog,' and I'm actually pretty surprised that this wasn't created years ago. I think spam has sort of a 'hot dog' flavor to begin with. So what's happening?

WHAT IS A SPAM DOG?

Basically, it's Spam formed into the shape of a traditional hot dog. Yes, you read that right. It looks like a hot dog, but really, it's SPAM shaped differently. I'm thinking, though, it's a really good move. What's more appetizing? A hot dog in a bun, or a square chunk of spam falling out of a can?

WHERE CAN YOU GET A SPAM DOG THIS SUMMER

Hormel says the new item was created for concession stands and food service locations, and Minnesotans will actually get a chance to try one this summer at CHS Field in St. Paul.

The company describes it as 'a new spin on the classic ballpark food', while still keeping that familiar Spam flavor fans have loved for decades. And honestly, this might be one of the most Minnesota food ideas ever created. Sounds like a State Fair booth should be next.

THE MANY FLAVORS OF SPAM

Spam has definitely had some interesting flavor experiments over the years. Hormel has rolled out maple-flavored Spam, figgy pudding Spam during the holidays, and plenty of other limited-edition varieties. But shaping it into a hot dog may be one of their boldest ideas yet. Are there going to be different flavors of SPAM dogs? Or are we going with the classic SPAM flavor?

Of course, Spam has a pretty deep history in Minnesota. The canned meat product was first introduced back in the 1930s and became especially important during World War II when it was used to help feed American troops overseas.

WHERE DID THE WORD SPAM COME FROM?

Even the name “Spam” has an unusual story behind it. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “SP” reportedly comes from “spice” and the “AM” from “ham.”

Now the big question is this:

Would YOU actually try a Spam Dog at a baseball game this summer?

Are you a die-hard Spam fan who thinks this sounds amazing? Or does this cross the line between creative and completely ridiculous?

I have a feeling Minnesotans are going to be all in on this new summer delight.
