There is a petition right now that has over 2,000 signatures aiming to give part of Minnesota's northwest angle back to Canada. The official title of it is "Give Canada back the Northwest Angle located in MANITOBA" and their goal is 100,000 signatures by January 29th, 2019. But why?

Due to a surveying errors, it is the only place in the United States outside Alaska that is north of the 49th parallel, which forms the border between the U.S. and Canada. The total population is only about 120 people which are native to Canadian soil. Make america great by correcting this critical survey error.

The errors they are referring to were from a map drawn by colonial American geographer, John Mitchell. The border being drawn between the U.S. and then Britain was supposed to cut through Lake of the Woods at a northwest angle, but the map John Mitchell drew was totally wrong but the founding fathers didn't do anything about it. Politics haven't changed much.

The only way to get to the angle is via gravel road through Canada so you need a passport to get there anyway. So should we give it back? Keep it? Does Canada even want it anyway? Do the 120 people that live there care at all? So many questions that need answers.
