Minnesotans Should Know The Music From This ‘Lost’ Country Band
MCBRIDE & THE RIDE?
McBride and the Ride...I believe one of the best bands out there in the 1990s just seemed to vanish from the scene, and no one asked where they went.
McBride & The Ride, founded in 1989, consisted of Terry McBride, on lead vocals and bass, Ray Herndon on vocals and guitar, and Billy Thomas on vocals and drums. They had numerous chart-topping hits including the songs 'Sacred Ground', 'Going Out of My Mind', 'Just One Night', and 'Love on the Loose, Heart on the Run'. They also won the 'Top New Vocal Group or Duet of the Year' award from the CMA's in 1992, and 'Top Vocal Group of the Year' in 1993.
WHERE DID THEY GO?
MCA Nashville, their label, decided to focus on Terry, removing the other two members of the group and renaming them 'Terry McBride & The Ride'. More players were added to the band. It sounds like they had one album in 1994 "Terry McBride & The Ride" before they disbanded that same year. The original members
Terry and the original members decided to reunite in 2000 and released 'Amarillo Sky' on Dualtone Records in 2002 before splitting up again.
SUCCESS
All three members had great success with other famous artists. Terry joined the backup band for Brooks & Dunn, who recorded more than 25 songs written by McBride & The Ride, including:
- I Am That Man
- If You See Him/If You See Her (with Reba McEntire)
- Play Something Country
- Proud of the House We Built
- You'll Always Be Loved By Me
Ray Herndon was in Lyle Lovett's Large band and Billy Thomas played drums for Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris.
REMEMBER THIS ONE?
Amarillo Sky we all know from hearing Jason Aldean's version, but McBride & The Ride recorded it first. It was written by Big Kenny and John Rich, along with Rodney Clawson and Bart Pursley.
BACK TOGETHER AGAIN
The good news is, that McBride and The Ride are back together again, reforming in 2021, and have new music that just came out! It's called 'No More Cryin.'
