Mike+You= Cure: Local Man Making His 6th Grueling Journey For ACS
MIKE GARLAND IS DOING IT AGAIN
Meet Mike Garland.
Mike is no ordinary man. When you meet him, you think of him as the nice guy who lives next door. He doesn't brag. He doesn't complain. Mike has raised over $115,000 for the American Cancer Society, and he's getting ready to make one more trip, and a difficult trip at that. A trip that will begin on June 1st, 2025.
I met Mike many years ago and interviewed him about a trip he was making to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Mike, like many of us, has lost family to cancer, and has also known many family and friends who have survived cancer because of the amazing work being done by the American Cancer Society.
WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES THAT?
A dedicated man. A loving son. A man who makes remembering his father and other loved ones that have either lost their lives to cancer, or survived it becuase of the incredible strides made by AMC.
Not only has he made one difficult, amazing trip that took months and months to train for to raise money for ACS, but he now has 5 of those incredible and grueling trips under his belt! Trips where he's had to sleep in a tent in the rain. Trips where he has injured himself. Trips where he's had to fix 3 flat tires, and fallen. Trips that he was unable to complete due to painful injuries...and yet...he perseveres. He's doing it again. All in the name of saving lives through the American Cancer Society.
He's now preparing for his next incredible trip. Watch the WJON interview in the video below.

When he retired, he thought he would try to raise $5000 for the American Cancer Society. He decided to take a bike ride to raise funds and raised $20,000!
THE AMAZING TRIPS MIKE HAS MADE FOR ACS
- In 2016, Mike bicycled from Becker to Ashland, Oregon, and back 3750 miles.
- In 2017, he walked the Pacific Crest Trail 2650 miles
- In 2017, Mike canoed the Mississippi 2350 miles.
- In 2018, he wrote a book called 'Mike+You=Cure.'
- Then, in 2021, Mike attempted to walk the Continental Divide. He walked approximately 500 miles, and then tore his MCL.
- In 2023, Mike attempted to walk the Appalachian Trail. On this journey, he completed just over 600 miles and then ended up tearing his rotator on shoulder.
Mike has made significant strides and continues to do so. He has raised over $115,000 for the American Cancer Society and Hope Lodge Minneapolis through his dedication and hard work.
MIKE IS TRAINING FOR HIS NEXT TRIP STARTING IN MAY
And Mike is doing it again! This time, you will be able to follow along his journey, as there will be a tracking device on his bike. The survival rate is much higher than it used to be, and much of that is because of what the ACS research has led to.
MIKE'S NEW ADVENTURE IS GETTING READY TO START
Mike will be riding his bike from Astoria, Oregon, to Washington, DC, and will be riding approximately 4,000 miles. Mike and his wife personally fund his trips, so he will be carrying along with him on his bike a small tent, camping supplies as well as supplies to fix his bike in case of blowouts, and who knows what else.
Mike started doing his journeys back when he was 57 years old. Now that he's 67, I asked him if anyone rides alongside him on the journey. The answer is no. He does this alone and will be doing it again.
I'm truly amazed at the pain and time Mike donates to raise money for the American Cancer Society. It's a true life objective for him, and I hope that you will follow him, donate to his cause, and cheer him along the way, for all this ONE man has done to fight a disease that has stolen so many wonderful people from our lives.
