Stop Fishing Shallow: Central MN Walleyes Have Moved To Their Summer Hangouts
If you are looking to treat dad to a day out on the water, or on the dock, fishing, you're going to want to know where the fish are, and aren't. Right now, walleye are moving to deeper water, bass are biting, and panfish are headed towards the weedlines. Here's what you need to know if you are dropping in a line this weekend.
Father's Day Fishing Guide
If you are planning on spending some time with dad out on or over the water, in addition to the quality time you'll spend together, you might also want to catch something, so here are some overall guides on where you'll most likely find fish this weekend across parts of Greater Minnesota. We'll start with the type of fish, then offer some lake conditions from recent fishing reports, where available.

Walleye
Walleye have moved on from the shallow water and are setting up for summer in deeper, cooler water. If you are targeting walleye this weekend, you should be looking for main-lake flats in 10-20 feet, developing weed edges, and rock reefs during low-light periods.
In terms of your set-up, slip bobbers and leeches, Lindy rigs with crawlers, and then crankbaits during evening hours.
Mille Lacs Report: Anglers are finding a strong evening bite on rock points and transition areas.
Leech Lake Report: Reports from Leech Lake indicate fish are holding on flats and emerging weedlines, with mornings and evenings producing the best action.
Bass
Bass fishing is entering one of the best stretches of the year. If you are on the hunt for bass, now is the time to be out there. Your first question is what type of bass are you looking to catch?
Smallmouth - you'll find smallmouth in and around rocky shorelines, boulder fields, and mid-depth rock structure.
Largemouth - you'll find largemouth bass in and around cabbage beds, Reed edges, and developing weedlines.
According to fishrapper.com, bass are aggressively feeding after spawning and are easier to locate than walleyes on some lakes.
Panfish
Like the rest of the fish, panfish are on the move and transitioning away from shoreline spawning areas. Look for panfish in cabbage weeds, sitting around 6-10 feet deep, along deep reed edges, and, of course, inside weedlines.
Lake Koronis in Paynesville is your ticket for both panfish and walleye right now.
