Sometimes it seems that Christmas sneaks up on us. What I mean by that is we look up and there are 2 or 3 paydays left before the big day, and we haven’t bought any gifts.

We tell ourselves every year we’re going to do better, but then, well, we don’t.

And it has been challenging the last couple of years for many Americans because the cost of everything has been so much higher. I’m talking about from the gas we put in our tanks to the food we put on our tables, nothing has been immune to the increase.

That’s why it shouldn’t surprise anyone that nearly a quarter of Americans are working a second job.  That number is up from 18% just a couple of years ago.

And more women than men are taking on extra work.

These findings come from the website Sidehustles.com for what they call “polyworking”, meaning a person is working two jobs.

55% of the workers who take on a second job say they’ve done so because the basic essentials of life are costing more, and they have to have the extra money to make ends meet.

1 in 3 workers who work remotely have a second job.

Here’s another interesting stat about those working two jobs, most feel that they have to keep that fact hidden from their primary employer. 3 out of 5 say they are keeping a secret from their boss.

A good percentage of people who work two jobs have a primary employer that is smaller, meaning they have less than 50 employees.

A lot of people who take on extra work in the last half of the year, do so to be able to afford Christmas gifts.

But there is a danger to being a “polyworker” 34% of people who are juggling jobs reach a burnout point faster than those who only have one job.

But the stress of working two jobs and not resting as much is not as bad as the stress of not having enough money to live on.
