The Foley Police Department is handing out tickets to kids on their bikes this summer. But unlike a speeding ticket, these tickets are actually wanted. In a post shared to Facebook, the Foley PD shared the "tickets" they are handing out are rewarding safe behavior:

Look what we got!!!!
If kiddos get caught wearing their helmets they could get a coupon for a free ice cream cone!!

The piece of paper reads:

I got caught!
Congratulations! You were foudn wearing your safety helmet while riding your bike/skateboard/scooter/in-line skates.

This promotion is happening in part with Dairy Queen, The American Automobile Association, and Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths. It is all about promoting a safe summer and making smart and healthy choices.

As far as bike helmet laws go, Minnesota doesn't have one, which means to say no helmet is required by Minnesota Bike Law. 21 states do require helmets for riders ages 18 and below, but Minnesota isn't one of them. That being said, a helmet is always a good idea. It can prevent further head and brain injury when bike accidents happen, and can be life-saving if the fall or crash is serious.

How to pick the right helmet:

  1. Try it On: Most helmets aren't one-size-fits-all. It's important to try them on to ensure the right fit.
  2. Check the Label: The label should show certification by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. That means it has been tested and proven to meet the federal safety standard.
  3. Check the Fit: A helmet should sit level and low, and fit snug all around. It should not move side to side or front to back on your child’s head.

Have a safe and fun summer!
