ST. CLOUD -- A deadly virus has affected about 300 hog barns around the state.

The disease is called the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus, which dehydrates young pigs.

Lee Johnston is the Extension Swine Specialist at the University of Minnesota, Morris. He says the survival rate is greater for adult pigs.

The virus does not affect humans and does not end up in the pork product.

Johnston says farmers need to be careful not to spread the virus to healthy livestock or other farms.

There have been concerns for higher pork prices because of the disease. Johnston says as of now the virus shouldn't affect pricing.

Currently there is no proven vaccine on the market.
