Community Steps Up To Preserve Duluth’s Holiday Tradition
Bentleyville is one of Minnesota’s most loved holiday traditions, bringing thousands of visitors to Duluth every year.
But after some recent weather damage, there was a moment where 2026 wasn’t looking so certain for the holiday tradition.
DAMAGE TO THE BENTLEYVILLE CHRISTMAS TREE
Over the past few weeks, back-to-back windstorms have caused some serious damage to the massive Bentleyville Christmas tree while it was in storage. The top 40-foot section of the tree began tipping after the support bracing failed, even lifting part of the structure off the ground.

That’s the kind of damage that could have easily sidelined the display for months.
But this is where the story takes a turn for the good.

WORKING TOGETHER TO SAVE A LOCAL TRADITION
Local crews jumped into action almost immediately. Ironworkers Local 512 and Sunbelt Rentals stepped in, assessed the damage, and got to work. After nearly a full day of repairs, the structure was stabilized and saved thanks to the fast-acting people who figured out a solution and worked together to make sure the repairs happened.
WHY IS SAVING THE BENTLEYVILLE TREE SO IMPORTANT?
Bentleyville isn’t just a Christmas attraction. Bentleyville is an economic engine for Duluth. The event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, many traveling from more than 100 miles away just to feel that holiday spirit. In fact, estimates show that the breathtaking holiday display brings in roughly $21 to $22 million annually for the city!

That kind of impact supports local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses during one of the most important seasons of the year.
BENTLEYVILLE GENERATES JOBS AND WAGES REGIONALLY
Studies also show Bentleyville helps support around 275 jobs and generates millions in wages and regional economic activity. So when that tree was in danger, it wasn’t just about losing a display; it was about protecting a holiday tradition that also fuels the local economy.
BENTLEYVILLE IS A DESTINATION
Bentleyville has become part of Duluth’s identity. It started as one man’s holiday display back in 2001 and has grown into a destination that families plan trips around every single year.
So saving that tree wasn’t just a quick repair job. It was the community showing up to protect something that means a whole lot more than lights. It was about protecting people and tradition, and a major piece of what makes Duluth feel like Duluth during the holidays.
