I have been shopping for flights for awhile, and they are SO EXPENSIVE recently.  Maybe it's because of where I would like to go, but wow.  Flights are a lot of money. And this isn't event including a hotel or a car rental.  Makes me wonder how anyone can afford to fly anywhere fun.  Might almost be more cost effective to drive than to fly.  But then you waste time driving instead of enjoying your vacation.  That is, unless your destination is after a very scenic drive with lots of attractions along the way.  Then driving is part of your vacation.

WHEN TO FLY

If you have only a limited amount of time, like you want to take a long weekend or something along those lines, then flying would be the optimal choice.

HACKS

There are some methods that you can use to get some upgraded flights for the economy price.  But, it does take some work on your end.  The easiest way is to get a credit card that gives you travel awards.  Something like the airline's credit card partner such as Delta with AmEx.  Or another credit card that gives you rewards that you can use howeve you'd like such as travel.  Some people put everything they buy onto a rewards credit card, then pay if off every month.  It's money you would already be spending, why not get rewarded for it too?

Another way would be to use a travel agent  They are trained to look for discounts and to help you out however they can to get you the best deal.  It just takes a lot of the leg work away from you, and onto someone who knows specifically where to look.  Plus, sometimes there are discounts for people like military, student, senior, etc.

BE CREATIVE

See if you can fly a little more creatively - such as flying to another nearby city and then drive to your actual destination.  Sometimes that can be more cost effective too.  Or, the times that you are flying.  Try to be flexible on your days and times.  If you have a more open-ended agenda, sometimes you can save in that way too.  Or, try to go during an off season for wherever you want to go.

EXPENDABLE INCOME

Hopefully you are able to get somewhere you would like to go without spending a ton to get there, and having more funds for fun stuff.
