When Is The Best Time To Wash Your Car During MN’s Winter Months?

It's snowing today, which made me think about getting a car wash. Inevitably here in the #BoldNorth when we see regular snowfall, which then means snowplows remove and push the snow from the roadways, and once they've pushed the snow off they drop some sand and salt. Salt, as you know, is enemy number 1 for all things metal, so I had to ask, when is the best time during the winter months to wash your car, here's what I learned.

I know plow drivers aren't out to get us; they are just doing their jobs, making the roads safe for the rest of us to drive on to and from home and work. But one of the things they do that is part of their job is drop/spread sand and salt. The sand helps with traction, and the salt helps to melt any ice that might form.

But as we know, salt isn't great with metal, especially when we mix salt with melting snow and sand, creating a briney-gritty substance that seems to get everywhere. So what can you do to protect your investment, your car? Wash it. But you should know that during the winter months, getting the underside of your vehicle is just as important as the top because you don't want that salt to sit and eat away at your paint and metal.

Triple A online states that you should try to wash your car at least once a month during the winter and to wash it after any big snow event, where you would come into contact with sand/salt.

"You should wash your car at least once a month throughout the year, but you may need to do so more often in the winter. It’s a good idea to wash your car after any big snowstorm, or when you believe your vehicle was exposed to salt, sand or other chemicals used to clean the road."
