Twins Swap Reliever Rogers To Padres For Starting Pitcher
With Opening Day barely over 24 hours away, the Twins and Padres have made a fairly big trade. The Twins will send reliever Taylor Rogers and outfielder Brent Rooker to the San Diego Padres in exchange for relief pitcher Emilio Pagan and starting pitcher Chris Paddack.
Paddack is the big piece for the Twins. Heading into 2019 he was the #34 ranked prospect in all of Major League Baseball before a promising rookie season in which he posted a 9-7 record and 155 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched.
He has not been as sharp in his last two seasons with earned run averages of 4.73 and 5.07 in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Pagan is a journeyman reliever who will be playing for his fifth team in six MLB seasons.
Rogers was expected to be the main late-inning option for the Twins this season but Minnesota dealt him to San Diego with just one year left on his contract. Rooker was the victim of a numbers game, with the Twins having a glut of outfielder/first baseman types.
The Twins open the season Friday against the Mariners at Target Field.
