Growing up my family motto was that "money doesn't matter because we are rich in love". There was a roof over our heads and food on the table. All was right in the world. I think being raised that way has made me have the mindset that as long as you work hard for what you want, all will be OK. Real happiness comes from quality time with the people around you.

That being said, money is still important. Bills need to be paid. How much money do you think a person needs to make in a year to be happy in Minnesota? A survey was done to determine that number and here is what it found for the Land of 10,000 Lakes:

  • Salary you need to be happy: $106,575
  • Salary you need for life evaluation: $96,425
  • Salary you need for emotional well-being: $60,900-$76,125

The study also found that residents of the Southern and Midwestern states may have a better shot at happiness, because they spend less on annual expenditures than other parts of the country.

I can tell you right now that I don't make anywhere close to that amount of money, but I'm still happy and doing just fine. Would I be made about a few extra dollars in my pocket? Absolutely not. But as I mentioned before, I think happiness comes from the people you surround yourself with, not a number in a bank account.
