On Sunday April 17th at 11 am join me for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight. This Sunday, Vern Gosdin gets the spotlight. We get started at 9 am with the Country Classic Radio Show at 98.1 Minnesota’s New Country, online and on your mobile device.

Gosdin grew up in rural Alabama born in Woodland, on August 5, 1934.  He came from the same generation as Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and George Jones.  Gosdin became one of the finest honky-tonk singers of his generation.  He was a fine singer with that rich baritone voice.  My favorite is “Set ’Em Up Joe.” Gosdin wrote the song with Dean Dillion, Buddy Cannon and Hank Cochran.  Gosdin recorded the song and took the song to number one.  This song was a tribute to Ernest Tubb.

Gosdin’s other number one and top ten hits include, “I Can Tell by the Way You Dance,” his first number one, “Chiseled in Stone,” “I’m Still Crazy,” “Do You Believe Me Now” and others.  Gosdin was known as ‘The Voice’ in the country music world.

Gosdin’s second marriage broke up in 1989.  He suffered a stroke in early April 2009, passed away at a Nashville Hospital on April 28, 2009 at 74 years old, survived by one son.

They got a vintage Victrola 1951, full of my favorite records that I grew up on, they got ole Hank and Lefty and there’s B24, set ’em up joe and play “Walking the Floor” Set ’em up Joe.
