I've been worried about the people I know who rely on SNAP benefits. Not “worried” in a passing, casual way, but worried like a weight that sits in the back of your mind while you’re going about your day.

Groceries aren’t cheap. Life isn’t cheap. And when you hear stories of people choosing between gas and groceries, between medication and food, it hits differently when you actually know those people. When they’re sitting across the table from you, when they’re texting to say they’re doing their best, but the numbers just aren’t adding up.

ARE WE TAKING IT BACK?

I kept hoping things would work out, even if just temporarily. Then, on Saturday, one of my friends sent a message: they had received their SNAP benefits. I could practically feel my shoulders drop. Relief. One small but very real victory for the people who desperately needed that help. One less thing for them to worry about, and honestly, one less thing for me to worry about, too. Being able to feed yourself and your family is not a luxury. It's not optional. It’s survival.

REVERSE PAYMENTS?

But then Sunday evening arrived, and so did the news that made my jaw drop. The federal government reversed course and instructed states to reverse the payments.

What!?!?

I re-read the message three times. Families had already woken up Saturday morning with hope. They checked their accounts. They planned grocery trips. And now, they were being told that money should never have been sent?

MINNESOTA SAYS THEY CAN'T UNDO PAYMENTS

According to an online article, Minnesota officials say they can’t undo the payments. Their system isn’t built to pull back money once it’s issued. On Friday, the USDA sent a memo instructing states to “pay out the November benefits in full.” So Minnesota did exactly that. They followed directions. They moved fast because hungry people don’t have time to wait.

Then, on Saturday night, the USDA changed the plan again and told states they “must immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025.”

I can’t imagine seeing those funds in your account, and feeling the relief of knowing your cupboards will be stocked, and then being told it was a mistake.

These aren’t abstract numbers on spreadsheets. These are groceries. These are meals. These are people. I'm hoping we will all be able to help our local food shelves if we can. They are going to need it.
