One of the most important things that veterans should know after they leave active service is that the job isn’t over.

While there may not be deployments, chow lines, MREs, or training, veterans still need to take care of their health, both mental and physical. I am lucky enough to have a few friends who served with honor in the U.S. Marine Corps, and when they "got out," they quickly realized that the civilian world could be overwhelming at times.

That is why every veteran should know what benefits are available, stay informed, and continue to serve not only their country as citizens but also themselves and their families. One organization that supports veterans in our area is DAV of Minnesota (Disabled American Veterans). Founded after World War I, DAV offers free transportation to VA appointments, outdoor recreational therapy, specialized assistance for female veterans, benefits assistance, and more.

They are also encouraging veterans and their supporters to advocate for better state policies for veterans and their families at the annual Veterans Day on the Hill on April 23, 2026, at the Cedar St. Armory and the Capitol Rotunda, both in St. Paul. Veterans Day on the Hill is a yearly event where Veterans across the state come together to raise their voices and meet with their lawmakers about veterans issues. This year Veterans will rally to discuss property taxes.

The day of advocacy often focuses on addressing veterans' homelessness and housing needs, mental health and suicide prevention resources, property tax exclusions and similar benefits, and county veterans service officers and statewide programs. DAV will reimburse any group providing free transportation to Veterans Day on the Hill half the cost of a charter bus or large van. Click here to learn more.

It's amazing to me that some veterans don't know about the high level of support available to them throughout Minnesota. I am passionate about ensuring the veterans in my life are connected to the resources they need — and I often make a point to check in with them, offering a friendly face and a hand when needed.
