Long-Term Lane Closures Now In Place On I-494 In Minnesota

The Minnesota Department Of Transportation is doing work on the 43-year-old I-494 bridge that goes over the Minnesota River. MnDOT notes that the bridge needs major repairs to continue to safely transport residents, visitors, and goods between the cities of Bloomington, Eagan, and Mendota Heights.

MnDOT provided a summary of work that will be done during this project, including:

• Repair pavement on I-494
• Reconstruct the regional trail
• Replace bridge joints
• Repair bridge deck, beam ends, and railings
• Reconstruct bearings
• Replace highway lighting
• Repair/replace drainage

The good news is that once this $62 million construction project is completed in the summer of 2026, everyone using the bridge will enjoy a smoother safer road, while the life of the bridge will have been extended.

However, to achieve that goal, all motorists will have to endure inconveniences at times, along with slowed travel.

Travel Impacts Beginning Thursday, May 2 On Interstate 494

MnDOT cautions motorists that starting at 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, they will be reducing Interstate 494 to two lanes in each direction between 24th Avenue in Bloomington and Pilot Knob Road in Eagan/Mendota Heights.

This will allow crews to make repairs to the westbound side of the I-494 bridge that crosses the Minnesota River. These lane closures are not short-term, they are expected to remain in place until late October.

Keep in mind that all construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule-permitting and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to plan for additional travel time to reach their destination, always be attentive, drive with caution, and slow down in work zones where workers are present.
