Gophers & Huskies Get Season Opening Wins Thursday
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-0) got their football season off to a winning start Thursday night in Minneapolis, dominating visiting New Mexico State (0-2) 48-10 at TCF Bank Stadium.
Freshman walk-on quarterback Zack Annexstad completed 16 of 33 attempts for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Gopher running back Rodney Smith rushed 24 times for 153 yards.
The St. Cloud State Huskies (1-0) used a last-minute touchdown to slip past visiting University of Mary (0-1) 14-13 Thursday night at Husky Stadium.
SCSU quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn had 23 completions for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 15-yard game winner to John Solberg.
The Gophers will try to make it two straight next Saturday (9/8) when Fresno State visits TCF Bank Stadium. The Huskies hit the road next Saturday to take on Minnesota-Crookston.
