Didn’t Go 20! Take A Look At This Lake Superior Lunker
We might be looking at a new state catch and release record, as a HUGE lake trout was just caught on Lake Superior. A social media post indicated that the fish was an inch larger than the current state record, and it was caught in part by the same fishing guide. Let's take a look at this big beauty.
This morning Isaiah had never caught a lake trout, let's just say that changed today. Started with a couple average ones, then a 36 incher and then the beast! Kelsey had caught the State Record catch and release with me last year at 42.50 inches, this one is 43.50 inches! It was a seemingly slow day of fishing but the monster bite made up for it! Around a dozen fish landed today with a few other lost. He's gonna have a tough time beating that one.
The catch measured out at 43.5", which makes it a full inch larger than the current state record, held by Kelsey Vanderheyden, of Stanchfield.
Lake trout, if you are unfamiliar, are native to Northern and North-Central Minnesota and according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources "Minnesota is one of only a few states with naturally reproducing lake trout populations. Its 116 lake trout lakes is second in number only to Alaska."

The possible new record, still awaiting the DNR to post the catch on their state record portion of the website, was caught with the assistance of Lake Superior Jigging, a fishing guide, that according to social media is "the only Jigging/Casting guide service for Lake Trout in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan on Lake Superior."
