Each month of the year, there are certain themes that are promoted more often during that month because it’s the month to bring awareness and education to that specific situation. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Fire Prevention Month to name a few.

It's also an important month for high school students, but another of this month's themes could also be impactful for adults. The Minnesota Department of Education took to social media this week to remind us about the fact that October is College Knowledge month.

For high school students, it’s a great month to take the interests they have and match those with a college where they can follow that path. Even if the student is a few years away from graduating high school, gathering information early can be helpful in learning about the courses they need to take while in high school, and to investigate that career path to see if they truly would want to study that occupation.

According to a Google search, only 27% to 40% of college graduates are working in the field they studied in college 10 years after graduation. The earlier you get information on not only the day-to-day of that career, but what changes that could be coming in the not-so-distant future is so important.

The Minnesota Goes to College Website has great information on learning more about schools and virtual events that will help answer questions about the application process, and how to pay for college.

For some adults, they’ve been out working for a while now, and they’re seeing there’s something they have an interest in but may not be sure how to go about pursuing that path. It's never too late, especially if you’re finding yourself in a job or career, you’re not happy with it.

Having all the information is so key to being able to make the right decision about something as important as college, so spend some time this month gathering all the facts, you never know what you’ll learn that will help find the direction you’ve wanted to take.
