SCAM ALERT FROM MNDOT

Recently, I've been receiving several text alerts that I need to pay money for a recent trip that I've taken, using an E-Z Pass in Minnesota.

The text states that I need to pay my fine by clicking HERE, and if I don't my license will be revoked!

PANIC

I stopped when I read that. Did I drive somewhere in Minnesota recently that I accidentally used an EZ Pass lane and didn't realize it? Did I do it last year? Did I do it at all?

As soon as I started worrying about it, I quickly thought to myself: SCAM. Anytime a text causes alarm and asks you to CLICK somewhere inside the text, DON'T DO IT. Once you click, you have opened up a can of worms.

SCAMMERS ARE AT IT AGAIN

The scammers will continue to ask for payment and make threats. Think about it. You give them your banking information, your address, and everything they ask for, and now you are out the money.

I've had these discussions with my bank before. There isn't much a bank can do if YOU permit them to take the money; whether or not they are a legitimate company doesn't matter. By clicking on a text like this, you are permitting that it is okay for them to withdraw your money.

MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WANTS YOU TO KNOW

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) recently posted to its social media pages that this scam is happening right now. They also want you to know that they will never text you and ask you for personal or sensitive information.

MnDOT does NOT accept credit card numbers by mail, email, chat, text, or voicemail. So! If you are like me and have received these messages, Don't respond. Don't click on anything inside that message.

You can learn more by going to the Minnesota Department of Transportation's website.
