I have never heard of Auto Brewery Syndrome until this morning, and I never would have believed it, had it not been for Doctors and researchers finding out what it is.

A 46 year old man this condition otherwise known as ABS, has a condition that causes bacteria in the gut to transform carbs into alcohol, according to the BMJ Open Gastroenterology journal. He suffered with this condition for 6 years, with everyone thinking he was an alcoholic...which he sort of was..but not on purpose.

The condition will flare up when people with the syndrome eat sugary or carb heavy food and drinks. It typically happens to people who have somehow disrupted their microbiome community in their gut. In this mans case, his symptoms started after he received a round of antiobiotics in 2011 for an injury.  It's believed that the medication disrupted the bacteria and fungi, and caused the condition. Can you imagine????

This poor guy was arrested  for driving drunk; which he actually was; but he hadn't been drinking. His blood alcohol registered at 2 times the legal limit.  NO ONE believed him when he said he hadn't been drinking.

Finally he found help at Richmond University Medical Center in New York. They monitored the guy for a couple months and finally got it under control.

So if this happens to you, just remember; it might be that you have ABS!
