For some families, finding the right summer camp isn't just about 'fun'...it's about finding a place where their child can truly feel comfortable.

A new camp at Pine Grove Zoo is designed to do exactly that. By creating a calmer, more welcoming environment before the zoo even opens to the public, organizers hope to give campers and caregivers a chance to experience the wonder of the zoo without the usual worries.

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL

There was a time in my life when finding the right summer activity for my son wasn't as simple as signing him up and dropping him off.

As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, I remember weighing every event differently. Would it be too loud? Too crowded? Too overwhelming? Would he enjoy it, or would we end up leaving early because there was simply too much going on?

That's why I immediately took notice when I learned about this summer camp being offered at Pine Grove Zoo in Little Falls.

WONDER WITHOUT WORRIES

It's called "Wonder Without Worries," and it's designed to provide a sensory-friendly zoo experience for guests of all ages.

The camp takes place before the zoo opens to the public on June 9th. By having this early camp, it creates a calmer environment with fewer distractions and less noise.

Instead of large crowds and busy walkways, participants will enjoy smaller groups, soothing sensory activities, and opportunities to connect with animals and nature in a welcoming setting.

IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE

For many families, experiences like this can make all the difference in the world.

While my son is now an adult and thriving, I still remember those years when finding activities that fit his needs sometimes felt like a challenge. It was difficult watching him get overwhelmed. I just wanted him to have fun like everyone else.

Programs that intentionally create a supportive environment can help families focus on having fun instead of worrying about whether their child will feel comfortable. If you've never had a child on the spectrum, you might now realize that it's not simply a matter of being unruly. These kids are usually very sensitive and kind, and with the right experiences, they can slowly learn to deal with their difficulties, and still learn about the world around them.

CAREGIVERS AND STUDENTS EXPLORE TOGETHER

According to Pine Grove Zoo, Wonder Without Worries is designed to be a gentle and inclusive experience where campers and caregivers can explore together at their own pace.

The camp is open to guests of all ages and requires a caregiver to attend. Registration is required in advance.

The cost is $80 per camper/caregiver pair, or $70 for zoo members.
