Are Weight Loss Medications Too Effective? Some Companies Say Yes!
I think it’s safe to say that most of us have heard of weight loss drugs like “Wegovy”. We hear the ads on radio, see the spots on television and there are so many ads online about these drugs.
It wasn’t that long ago that those who were seeking those drugs had a couple of challenges, which were getting their doctor to prescribe them, or if the doctor said it’s ok to take the med’s, there was a shortage.
Now it seems that those hurdles aren’t as big of a deal as they once were, so I guess that means they must work, right.
Well, according to research from Cornell University, they do. The Mornings Brew featured an article that shows the results of the study.
As a matter of fact, they are so effective that companies like Kraft Heinz and Campbells are reporting declines in sales. The study says that those taking the GLP1 medications spend 6% less on groceries in the first six months of taking the drugs.
Potato chips and sweet baked items have seen the biggest drop in sales since these drugs came on to the scene. The study also shows that if someone in the house is taking a GLP1, they are also spending less at fast food restaurants and at coffee shops.
The folks at Hershey’s are also showing a decline in their sales with more and more people seeking GLP1 medications.
Food companies are working on their pivot to try and keep customers buying at least some of their products by offering smaller portion sizes and changing out unhealthy ingredients with healthier choices.
How will this impact what companies offer us in the future? Well, that depends on how many people keep using the drugs, which have been around long enough now to show that two out of three people using the drugs stop using them after the first year.
So back to the original question, do these drugs work, and I’d say that there’s no question that they do, just ask those companies who helped us add on the pounds over the years, these drugs may be their kryptonite.
