Adopted Minnesotans Eagerly Await July 1st

BIG CHANGES COMING FOR ADOPTED PEOPLE IN MINNESOTA JULY 1ST

If you or someone you know was adopted and have always wanted to know who your birth parents were, things are getting ready to change for you.

A law passed in 2023 will now allow adopted people born in Minnesota, who are 18 years of age or older, to request a non-certified copy of their original birth records from the Minnesota Department of Health beginning on Monday, July 1st, 2024.

People born outside Minnesota, but adopted IN Minnesota, will be able to request information from the agency responsible for supervising their adoption.

BIRTH PARENTS NEED TO FILL OUT A CONTACT PREFERENCE FORM

Suppose you are a parent whose child was placed for adoption. In that case, you are strongly encouraged to complete a Birth Parent Contact Preference Form by July 1st, to indicate whether or not you'd like to be contacted by the adopted person, and if you want to provide them with additional information. The form will be released to the adopted person if they request their original birth records.

AFFADAVIT EXPIRATION JUNE 30TH, 2024

Any affidavit that you may have completed in the past to provide or restrict access to the birth records, will expire on June 30th, 2024.

Parents who have put their children up for adoption need to be aware that they MAY be contacted even if they indicate a preference not to be.
