Merle Haggard – “Rainbow Stew” - 1981

 

 

 

Rainbow Stew is a live song written and recorded by Merle Haggard.  It was released in June 1981 and the song topped the country chart at number four.

News & Events in 1981:

  • The first flight of the space shuttle Columbia took place.
  • Solidarity inspired protests and general strikes lead to imposition of martial law and the eventual outlawing of the Solidarity party in Poland.
  • A Washington Post reporter, Janet Cook, admits her feature was fabricated and relinquished the Pulitzer Prize.

Henson Cargill – “Skip a Rope” - 1967

 

 

 

Skip a Rope is a 1967 single by Henson Cargill, written by Jack Moran and Glenn Tubb.  It was Cargill’s only number one hit, which stayed at number one for five weeks on the country chart.

News & Events from 1967:

  • There is racial violence in Detroit where 7000 national guardsman aid police after a night of rioting
  • Thurgood Marshall sworn in as the first black US Supreme Court Justice
  • Interracial marriage is declared constitutional by the Supreme Court in the “Loving V. Virginia Care.”

Patty Loveless – “Blame it on your Heart” - 1993

 

 

 

Harlan Howard and Kostas wrote Blame it on your Heart, which was recorded by Patty Loveless.  The song was released in April of 1993 and it featured in the 1993 film, The Thing Called Love. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

News & Events of 1993:

  • President Clinton agrees to compromise on the military’s ban on homosexuals.
  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg appointed to the Supreme Court on June 14th
  • Islamic Fundamentalists bomb the World Trade Center.

Dolly Parton – “Love is Like a Butterfly” - 1974

 

 

 

This song was written and performed by Dolly Parton.  Love is Like a Butterfly was Dolly’s fourth number one country hit as a solo artist.

News & Events from 1974:

  • IRA begins bombing campaign on Mainland Britain and bombs The Tower of London on July 17th.
  • President Ford gives unconditional pardon to Nixon.
  • Born in the year 1974, Leonardo DiCaprio on November 11th and Jimmy Fallon on September 19th.

George Jones – “The Right Left Hand” - 1987

 

 

 

The Right Left Hand is written by Dennis Knutson and A.L. Owens and recorded by George Jones.  It was released in January of 1987.  The song scored a number eight on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

News & Events from 1987:

  • US stock market crashes on Monday October 19th with 508 point drop.
  • Terry Waite, the special envoy of the Archbishop of Canterbury in Lebanon, is kidnapped in Beirut
  • The Gary Hart scandal with model Donna Rice destroys his political career.
