The Bellamy Brothers – “Old Hippie” - 1985

 

 

 

David Bellamy wrote Old Hippie and the song was recorded by the country duo The Bellamy Brothers.  The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in July of 1985.

News and events from 1985: Rock Hudson dies of Aids at age 59; he was the first major star to fall victim to the disease.  British scientists report the opening of an enormous hole in the Earth’s Ozone layer over Antarctica and Route 66 is removed from the United States Highway system.

He turned thirty five last Sunday, in his hair he found some grey, but he still ain’t changed his life style.

 


 

Johnny Cash – “A Boy Named Sue” - 1969

 

 

 

A Boy Named Sue is a poem written by Shel Silverstein and made popular by Johnny Cash.   The song spent three weeks at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in 1969.

News and events from 1969: Richard Nixon is inaugurated as the 37th President of United States.  Stonewall riots in New York marks the beginning of gay rights movement on June 28th.  The FCC bans all cigarette advertising on television and radio.

Linda Ronstadt – “When Will I Be Loved” - 1975

 

 

 

Phil Everly wrote this song in 1960 and it was covered by Linda Ronstadt in 1975.  The song topped the country chart at number two in June of that year.

News and events from 1975: the city of Saigon is surrendered and remaining Americans are evacuated ending the Vietnam War on April 30th.  Saturday Night Live premiers on NBC with George Carlin hosting the first show and home videotape systems (the VCR) are developed in Japan by Sony.

Randy Travis – “Forever and Ever, Amen” - 1987

 

 

 

Forever and Ever, Amen is written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz and recorded by Randy Travis. The song was his third number one on Billboards Hot Country Singles Chart.  It won a Grammy for Best Country Song and an Academy of Country Music Award for Song of the Year.

News and events from 1987: Prime Minister Thatcher wins a rare third term in Britain on June 11th, the US Supreme Court rules Rotary Clubs must admit women on May 4th and President Reagan says the Iran Arms-Contra policy went astray and accepts responsibility on August 12th.

Patty Loveless – “Chains” - 1990

 

 

 

Chains is written by Hal Bynum and Bud Reneau and recorded by Patty Loveless.  Chains was Loveless’ second number one hit on the country chart.  Patty is a distant cousin of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.

News and events of 1990: the communist party relinquishes sole power in the Soviet government, Margaret Thatcher resigns as British Prime Minister on November 22nd with John Major succeeding her and smoking on domestic airplane flights in banned.
