I feel like this service is long overdue. In Minnesota we can now text 911 in an emergency situation. Minnesota is the 8th state in the US to have this service available, and more are expected to follow suit.

I have always wondered why this didn't come sooner. Have you seen the movie Taken? Maybe Liam Neeson's daughter wouldn't have been kidnapped if she could've texted 911 instead of had to talk on the phone with them.

This new service was designed with people that have hearing and speaking disabilities in mind. It was also designed to help people who might be experiencing a burglary or home invasion where talking on the phone would put them more at risk. I think this is a great addition to our state emergency services, and of course it is still encouraged that you call 911 first if possible, but this is a great alternative.
