Over the last week every time I turn on the news all I hear about is the Voter ID Amendment. After hearing this for a week, I have to ask, what's the big deal?

I want to start off by saying, I am not a political person. I don't fully understand politics and I don't follow them very closely. I will be the first to admit that I needed to pay more attention in my Government and Economics class in high school or better yet, I need to sit with someone that truly understands it and let them explain it to me in language I can understand.

The reason I just told you this is because this is not a political piece. This is not me saying any side is right or wrong. This is not me saying you should vote a certain way or not. That's your business.

I honestly don't understand why this is such a big deal. I grew up in Alabama. My entire life outside of Alabama has been filled with people saying how backwoods we are and how dumb people in Alabama are. I'll tell you this, I first registered to vote in Alabama and my first election I voted in was in Alabama. Guess what, I had to show photo ID when I walked into my precinct. When I moved to New York and Connecticut and voted in those states I had to show photo ID. So this concept isn't new to me at all.

Some say they oppose this because some people don't have identification. When I moved to Minnesota, I had to show photo ID to rent my apartment, I then had to show photo ID to register my car. I had to show photo ID to open my bank account. Every time I go to the bank to cash a check, make a deposit or a withdrawal, I have to show photo ID. When I use my credit or debit card in a store I have to show photo ID. For me to get my job, I had to give them a copy of my driver's license. How can someone survive in today's society without some type of ID?

This morning I was watching the news and the comment was made in the story that if voters pass the amendment that it won't be part of the constitution for years because our lawmakers will take it to court. That's what puzzled me so much. Why would our lawmakers fight something the voters have passed?

I'm not going to go on about this. I'm going to ask you.

Do you think showing ID to vote is a big deal or not?
